Swim Meets 101

ARRIVAL TIME: Please arrive at the pool on time for all meets.

  • Home Meets
    • Waves Warm Up: 4:00 pm
    • Meet Start: 5:00pm
  • Away Meets
    • Waves Warm Up: 4:30 pm
    • Meet Start: 5:00pm

COACHING:

  • During the meet coaches will be on deck helping swimmers get set up for starts, reminding swimmers of specifics for each race (stroke type, sequence, etc...). Please allow them to focus on these activities.
  • No parents should be in the clerk of the course area, start or finish areas that are not working a volunteer shift.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Team swimsuit, cap, goggles (an extra pair of goggles is a good idea!), team tshirt, towel, and sunscreen. Make sure all items are well labeled with your child's name.
  • The concession stand sells food & drinks during the meet.
  • Folding camp chairs to sit on, and a canopy for shade if you have one. Waves families will sit on the South deck of the pool. The North side (between the two pools) will be left open for our visiting team.
  • Event reports/heat sheets can be printed from the website, and a black sharpie marker for marking up your child with their events.

VOLUNTEERS:

  • If you have signed up to volunteer NO MATTER WHAT SHIFT, PLEASE check in with our volunteer coordinator as soon as you get to the pool. We LOVE our volunteers and like to know we have all our bases covered.
  • Waterstone Waves swim team is a parent-run organization. More than 40 individuals are needed for each swim meet to run effectively; therefore, parents are REQUIRED to volunteer in order for their children to swim.
The summer league season has a 6-8 dual meets against other teams in the area and the Inner-Squad Meet. Each family is REQUIRED to work 3 volunteer slots. The Waves Swim Team reserves the right to charge $50.00 per volunteer session for a family failing to meet their volunteer requirements.

When you pay, you will see a $150 conditional fee (in a gray box) in your cart. This fee is only charged if you fail to fulfill your parent commitment. Once your volunteer job credits are fulfilled your fee will be released.

DURING THE MEETS:

  • Swim meets are about bonding and having fun! Group games like cards, loom bracelets, and other things of the sort are encouraged!
  • Swimmers may be placed in an event that they are not fond of. This is also okay! These meets are meant to have fun and not to be stressful. When making line-ups the coaching staff takes everyone’s abilities into consideration. You never know if you will like it until you try it!
  • The Announcer/Starter: Will announce each event when the clerk of course is ready to begin each event and heat. There will also be an event board on deck that will show the current event number.
  • Disqualifications (DQs): DQs are a normal part of the learning process in swimming competitions. Even the most seasoned swimmers get DQ’d from time to time. A DQ signifies that there is something the swimmer needs to fix in the technique of their start, stroke, turn or finish. DQs should always be handled positively and with lots of empathy and support.
  • Be a Good Swim Parent: Be Enthusiastic and Supportive! Show good sportsmanship at all times toward coaches, officials, opponents and teammates. Let the Coach do the Coaching! Your role is to provide love and support regardless of outcome. Encourage your child’s efforts and point out the positive. Let the coach be the one to critique your swimmer’s performance and technique.
  • Have Fun! Let your child see you enjoy the camaraderie of the team.
